एक व्यक्ति नित्य ही समुद्र तट पर जाता और वहां घंटों बैठा रहता। आती-जाती लहरों को निरंतर देखता रहता। बीच-बीच में वह कुछ उठाकर समुद्र में फेंकता, फिर आकर अपने स्थान पर बैठ जाता। तट पर आने वाले लोग उसे विक्षिप्त समझते और प्राय: उसका उपहास किया करते थे। कोई उसे ताने कसता तो कोई अपशब्द कहता, किंतु वह मौन रहता और अपना यह प्रतिदिन का क्रम नहीं छोड़ता। एक दिन वह समुद्र तट पर खड़ा तरंगों को देख रहा था। थोड़ी देर बाद उसने समुद्र में कुछ फेंकना शुरू किया। उसकी इस गतिविधि को एक यात्री ने देखा। पहले तो उसने भी यही समझा कि यह मानसिक रूप से बीमार है, फिर उसके मन में आया कि इससे चलकर पूछें तो। वह व्यक्ति के निकट आकर बोला- भाई! यह तुम क्या कर रहे हो? उस व्यक्ति ने उत्तर दिया- देखते ... आप हाथी नहीं इंसान हैं !

एक आदमी कहीं से गुजर रहा था, तभी उसने सड़क के किनारे बंधे हाथियों को देखा, और अचानक रुक गया. उसने देखा कि हाथियों के अगले पैर में एक रस्सी बंधी हुई है, उसे इस बात का बड़ा अचरज हुआ की हाथी जैसे विशालकाय जीव लोहे की जंजीरों की जगह बस एक छोटी सी रस्सी से बंधे हुए हैं!!! ये स्पष्ठ था कि हाथी जब चाहते तब अपने बंधन तोड़ कर कहीं भी जा सकते थे, पर किसी वजह से वो ऐसा नहीं कर रहे थे.
