The United States Government will be required to pay the Indian tribe Navajo a large compensation of $554 million through any process of law. The decision was taken due to a long-standing claim of Indians according to mismanagement of funds and natural resources during several decades.
Americans and Indians dispute regarding this issue has not been settled within 50 years. All this time, the court could not take the right decision. Such a large financial compensation, ever paid Indian tribe, is considered to be the biggest in history.
The US authorities control 5.7 hectares of land, which belongs to the Navajo. Tribe put land out on lease to the Americans. And they used it for agriculture, coal and oil industries, and, of course, wood production.
As soon as America pays $554 million tribal leaders, Navajo will recall all claims according to the authorities actions related to natural resources in the territory of the reservation. Mutual action of the two sides will finally put the end of such a long trial.
However, the prosecutor general of the tribe said that this agreement with the United States did not exclude further inconsistencies in the issues of water pollution in the concession area. The leader of the Navajo Ben Shelly said that such result of these events was favorable to the whole tribe. Indians will hold a general meeting, where together will make a decision on how to take advantage of the funding received.
The US prosecutor general Eric Holder, said that this agreement was a historic event. Thus, it emphasizes the desire of the Ministry of Justice to strengthen the friendly relations with the indigenous population of the continent.
